CAMPAIGNERS have called a public meeting as they continue their battle to prevent development of a prominent Victorian building in Saltburn.
The owners of Brockley Hall, which overlooks the Valley Gardens in the town, have applied for planning permission to build an apartment block in its grounds as well as a replace an extension.
But residents have fought against the scheme and last week Redcar and Cleveland councillors decided to conduct a site visit before making a decision.
Campaigner David Knowles said: "I am shocked at the complete lack of care shown so far by the council in protecting and enhancing Saltburns unique historic character. This development reminds me of the near demolition in the 1970s of Saltburn's award winning pier by short-sighted, ill-informed councillors."
Resident Mo Shevis added: "I have seen Saltburn blossom from the running to seed town it was in 1979 to the vibrant confident place it is today.
"That transformation has been brought about by the collaboration between local organisations, businesses and groups and a local council. We have, I believe also shared a deep respect for the wonderful heritage which our Victorian forebears granted us, and have sought to both preserve and celebrate this heritage."
The hall is a holiday retreat for Christians and has been operating from the site for more than 50 years.
Residents, councillors, and the local MP are being urged to attend the meeting at Saltburn Community Centre, on Sunday, October 25 at 2pm.
