Hartlepool’s Church Street will be closed to all traffic from midnight until 5am on Friday and Saturday nights for a six week trial period starting on Friday, October 23.
Church Street will be closed below the junction with Station Approach and Whitby Street and there will be no access to Church Street from Mainsforth Terrace or Lynn Street.
Ian Harrison, Hartlepool Council’s Principal Licensing Officer, said: “Church Street is a very popular location for revellers, particularly during the early hours, and we want to ensure that people can come and enjoy themselves in a safe environment.”
Chief Inspector Phil Veitch of Cleveland Police added: “Public safety is of paramount concern to us and we are hopeful that this temporary road closure will greatly improve the safety of the area without causing undue inconvenience to other road users”.
Local taxi companies have been informed of the closure and new temporary taxi ranks will be available in Whitby Street and on Church Street near Mainsforth Terrace.
Depending on the results of the six-week trial, the Council and the Police may consider closing the road permanently on Friday and Saturday nights.
