MINDLESS vandals have damaged graves at a North-East cemetery.
Hartlepool Police are appealing for information to help crackdown on anti-social behaviour in Stranton Cemetery in the town.
The site has been the focus of criminal damage and thefts in recent weeks with graves damaged and memories of loved ones stolen.
Sergeant Rikki Mansell, of Hartlepool Police, said: "The cemetery is a place of remembrance where people can come to gather their thoughts and remember their loved ones.
"Arriving to find a memorable item has been stolen or the grave of your loved one has been vandalised is the last thing that you would expect.
"Such behaviour is totally deplorable and very upsetting for families concerned, they shouldn’t have to tolerate this.
Inspector Peter Howarth, of Hartlepool Police, added: "We are taking action to crackdown on anti-social behaviour in the area by stepping up high visibility patrols in and around the cemetery and working closely with various partners, including the anti-social behaviour team to ensure those responsible will have the appropriate action taken against them.
"We would also appeal to members of the public to help us by contacting the police immediately if they see any suspicious activity. The information we receive from the public is vital and by working together we can combat the problems faced at Stranton Cemetery and bring the offenders to justice for their crimes.
Peter Newstead, Hartlepool Borough Council’s cemeteries and crematorium registrar, said: "We are appalled that anyone would stoop so low as to vandalise graves or steal items placed on them."
