A SWEET-SHOP owner who ran 112 miles through the night despite having sprained both her ankles and picking up a painful skin infection has vowed to take on more challenges.

Rachael Kenny, 32, somehow got through her epic run in 36 hours to raise cash for the Friends of Galley Hill Primary School in Guisborough.

The owner of the two Kitty’s Sweet Shops in Guisborough and Saltburn, who vowed to complete 30 challenges on her 30th birthday, said it was the thought of letting the school down that kept her going.

She explained that she fell coming off Roseberry Topping in about the 45th mile of her run, which was from Helmsley taking in part of the Cleveland Way.

An insect bite also led to a skin infection causing pain in her legs every time she ran. Her feet swelled up so much she had to complete the run wearing walking boots and she lost seven toe nails on the run which was in wet and windy conditions.

Despite the gruelling experience, Miss Kenney is planning to take on more physical challenges and experiences.

She said: “When I turned 30, I just thought, ‘right, I’m doing 30 challenges’ and it’s taken on a life of its own. I’ve got planned is ‘wing walking’ which is walking on the wings of a plane while it’s up the air.”

Miss Kenney, originally of Middlesbrough but now living in Redcar, explained she’s on the Galley Hill school committee simply to support the community where she works and because some of the school children come to her shop. Her and other members of the Friends of the school have raised a few hundred pounds towards IT equipment.
