A FOOTBALL fan is set to ‘Run for Muamba’ this weekend when he represents Hartlepool United in the BUPA Great Manchester Run.
Former Bolton Wanderers star Fabrice Muamba will be the honorary starter of Britain’s biggest 10k running event which takes place on Sunday (May 26).
More than 40,000 people are expected to take part this year, including a team of 25, one for each year of Muamba’s life, running on behalf of his ‘Hearts and Goals’ campaign which helps place lifesaving defibrillators in communities.
Race organisers Nova have also recruited a football fan from all Premier and Football League teams to run on behalf of their clubs in a show of unity and to celebrate his recovery.
Paul Smith, who is so dedicated to his sport that he’s enjoyed a run every single day since the start of the 2007, came to Victoria Park to show off his number and reveal his pride at supporting the campaign.
“I’m honoured to be representing Pools and also assisting the ‘Hearts and Goals’ campaign,” he said.
“This kind of event is right up my street and now I’ve got my number sorted I just can’t wait to get there and get going.
“I’ll be very proud running in my Pools kit and hopefully the participation of all those representing the other clubs can help raise awareness of the campaign.”
