AN HISTORIC fountain has been removed for repositioning on Stockton High Street.

Dodshon’s Fountain will be placed nearer its original location at the southern end of the High Street as part of the £38m redevelopment of Stockton Town Centre.

The drinking fountain was erected by public subscription in 1878 to commemorate the work of John Dodshon (1811-1875), a local Quaker and philanthropist.

Other improvement works include paving, new road surfaces, lighting, street furniture and signage as well as reposition bus stops and taxi ranks.

Councillor Mike Smith, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport at Stockton Council, said: “Dodshon’s Fountain is an important landmark for Stockton and we are very pleased that we are able to conserve this historic fountain for future generations.

“The removal of Dodshon’s Fountain to its new home nearer to its original location is another exciting step forward in this ambitious scheme that aims to revitalise Stockton Town Centre.”

The first phase of the transformation is due for completion by August 2013.

Further phases of work will follow creating a focal point in the central area incorporating seating, grass and a stylish water feature. There will also be a space for regular and specialist markets.

Views and access to the river from the High Street will be opened up to encourage people to enjoy events and activities on the riverside.
