THE VICE-CHANCELLOR of Teesside University is set to travel more than 6,000 miles to present an honorary degree.

Celebrity interior designer Eric Leong will receive the honorary degree at a ceremony in Kauala Lumpur on Saturday.

Vice-Chancellor Graham Henderson is making the journey to personally congratulate Mr Leong, who visited Teesside University last year and spent ten days working with students through a series of workshops and masterclasses.

Professor Henderson said: “My colleagues and our students greatly enjoyed and appreciated Dr Leong’s visit to our University last year, and we are delighted to recognise his achievements through the award of an honorary Doctor of Art, which I am privileged and honoured to be able to present to him in his own home country.”

Mr Leong, known in Malaysia as ‘Design King’, said he was delighted to accept the degree, describing it as a huge honour.

The university declined to comment when asked how the trip will be funded but said that the visit formed part of an annual visit to South East Asia which is in line with the university’s published internationalisation strategy.
