A YOUNG rugby team has returned triumphant from a World Cup tournament.

Wensleydale Under-9s won the event, which saw teams from across Yorkshire take on the name of a rugby-playing nation, on Sunday.

The team - which played as Ireland - beat Ripon A, Wetherby A, York A and drew with Harrogate on the way to the final where they beat York B.

Coach Janicke Aitken said: “The skill level on display was amazing considering this was only their second ever contact match.

“The whole team played with enthusiasm, great energy and determination.

“The squad had no substitutes for most of the matches, so all nine players played in every game. Everyone gave everything and you could see it in the faces of the guys after the final whistle.”

Other Wensleydale players joined with Richmond to form a Dales team, which played as South Africa.

The contest was hosted by Ripon Rugby Club.
