A TEENAGER who has turned his life around after falling on hard times has been presented with a national award for his achievements.

Andrew Hutchins, from Richmond, North Yorkshire, was chosen from more than 18,000 hopefuls for a YMCA Training award.

The 18-year-old first came to YMCA Training Northallerton to gain qualifications and to help him find some direction in his life.

He was living with his step-father and brother and the relationship was very turbulent following the death of his mother.

Andrew was asked to leave his home along with his brother and found himself sofa-surfing.

With the help of the YMCA, he found a place to live and spent time in the centre working on some qualifications.

He was presented with his award by former England and British Lions scrum-half Austin Healey, who said: “Andrew is a real inspiration to others – he has worked hard to overcome the barriers in his life and create a more positive future – it just goes to show that enthusiasm, hard work and perseverance can pay off.”

Andrew said: “I think I have done very well since I started at YMCA Training and I am proud of everything I have achieved.

“I did not really think that I would be living on my own and working through an apprenticeship when I started but I am really positive about the future and looking forward to it.

This award means that other people have seen how well I have worked and it also means a lot to the people who have supported me.”

Anne Linsey, chief executive of YMCA Training, said: “Our award winners have all demonstrated stories of personal success, through gaining qualifications, developing personal skills and making a positive progression.

“Each of them has also shown admirable dedication and commitment to achieving their goals.”
