SCHOOLCHILDREN are being encouraged to take care of their money by opening special savings accounts at school.
The School Savings Club scheme has been organised by the North Yorkshire Credit Union, which is working with three schools in Richmondshire to help children learn about money and the importance of saving.
Children at Hipswell Primary School, Reeth and Gunnerside Primary School and Askrigg Primary School can now put money into their savings accounts every two weeks at school. Karl Hawes, chairman of the North Yorkshire Credit Union governing body, said: “Its really important that children get to learn about money and the importance of savings. While this is part of school curriculum, the credit union provides additional money skills lesson for the pupils, which they have really enjoyed.”
Hipswell School head teacher John Sykes added “We think it is really important to get the children into the habit of saving early in life. Now, thanks to our volunteers who are running the club, and the help from North Yorkshire Credit Union, we are able to offer this opportunity at the school.”
To join the savings scheme children complete an application form signed by an authorising adult and then bring money in to school using a secure sealed money pocket.
The union is looking for schools to join up to the scheme to expand it across Richmondshire.
