THREE former councillors who gave 63 years of combined service to a district council have been named Honorary Aldermen.
Raymond Alderson, Jim Fryer and Michael Heseltine each received the honour at a special meeting of Richmondshire District Council, where members paid tribute to their years of service.
The title of Honorary Alderman is used to recognise councillors who have made an outstanding contribution to the district and their community during their term of office.
Mr Alderson served the council for 23 years between 1988 and 2011, representing the Grinton and Upper Swaledale ward, which was later renamed Swaledale. He was chairman of the council three times and served on a number of committees during his years as a councillor.
Jim Fryer was elected to the council in 1991, representing the Scorton ward, which later remamed Brompton-on-Swale and Scorton.
During his 20 years he served on environment, planning and appeals committees and was part of the Local Development Framework working group.
Mr Heseltine also gave 20 years service between 1991 and 2011 for the Swaleside ward - later renamed Brompton-on-Swale and Scorton. He was chairman of the council twice and served on various committees.
The former members were presented with framed testimonials by the chairman of the council, Councillor Jill McMullon.
Their names will be added to the list of Honorary Aldermen in the Council Chamber in Swale House, Richmond.
