RAILWAY accident investigators are attempting to identify the remains of a person who was hit by a high-speed train.
The victim of the incident, at 2.20pm, on the south-bound track of the East Coast Mainline at Northallerton Station, was declared dead by paramedics at the scene.
It is unclear whether there were other passengers on the platform when the person was struck by the noon Edinburgh to Kings Cross service, run by rail operator East Coast.
But a British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: “It looks to have been an individual act. We are not appealing for witnesses and it is currently not being treated as suspicious.”
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesman said a crew had assisted police at the scene.
East Coast said the staff which witnessed the incident were being offered support, which could include counselling.
Passengers were being transported between Darlington and York by coach as disruption to East Coast, Cross Country, First Transpennine Express and Grand Central trains was expected to last until 7pm.
