A GLIDING group which introduces 300 youngsters a year to the pursuit has become the first in the country to land a Sport England quality award.
Yorkshire Gliding Club, which is based on Sutton Bank, near Thirsk, has been given Clubmark accreditation for developing a high quality, welcoming environment for young participants.
The club works with local Scout groups, pupils and a cadre of young people under training to become qualified pilots.
Yorkshire Gliding Club is committed to encouraging more children to become interested in flying and, as part of its contribution to inspiring youngsters in the sport, the club cuts the cost of flying for them and helps them obtain grants available to finance their flying.
A club spokesman said gliding helps instills awareness and responsibility in young people and can trigger thoughts of a career in aviation, not only as a pilot but roles in administration and the technical side of the industry.
Graham Evison, Yorkshire Gliding Club chairman, said: “We are proud to be awarded with the Clubmark accreditation.
“This is a major endorsement of Yorkshire Gliding Club’s capability procedures and dedication to have youngsters participate in flying.
“We believe that this award will encourage more young people and their parents to recognise the opportunities this sport affords.”
