PEOPLE are being encouraged to be good neighbours this winter as part of a series of projects to help people stay safe in the cold winter months.
A new initiative from the Hambleton and Richmondshire Strategic Forum will see leaflets and posters circulated around the districts with useful telephone numbers and information on snow clearing, dealing with power failures and finding tradesmen.
The campaign will also see two emergency helplines opened when severe weather conditions strike, which will give residents a single point of contact for information.
During the last two winters the severe weather kept many people indoors and those who ventured out often put themselves at risk.
Forum members have urged people to be a ‘good neighbour’, whatever the age of the person living next door, by carrying out tasks such as clearing snow, collecting prescriptions and doing shopping or just being there for a chat during long cold spells.
Forum chairman Rosemary Taylor said: “Through this initiative we are looking to address concerns expressed by Age UK over the provision for elderly people through the winter.
“We want to encourage communities to take responsibility for those who may vulnerable during periods of severe weather. By promoting good neighbourliness and self help we believe communities will be better prepared for the winter ahead.
“We also hope that this approach will help relieve the pressure on the statutory and voluntary organisations that have to respond to an increase in emergency call-outs during the winter.”
The advice leaflet has been produced by Age UK and is available at district council offices and libraries around Hambleton and Richmondshire.
The emergency winter helpline for Hambleton is 0845-1211-555 and Richmondshire’s 01748-829100.
