A FISH and chip shop in a popular seaside resort is celebrating after being named the best in the region.
Quayside in Whitby has been named the Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year in North-East England.
It will now compete against nine other regional winners from across the UK for the national title at the grand final to be held in London in January.
The shop is owned by the Fusco family, who are something of a fish and chip dynasty in Whitby.
The family business, Fusco Ltd., runs two of the town's most popular and award winning fish and chip shops Royal Fisheries and Quayside, overseen by matriarch Carol.
All four of her children work in the family business, with Quayside run by son Stuart, who has previously been awarded the title Young Fish Frier of the Year.
“This is a huge boost for the staff and my family,” he said.
“After a busy summer the award is a great incentive to push our high standards to the next level.
“To be named the best in the region will have a knock-on effect for the whole area, helping to bring in more tourists who'll travel to Whitby for an award winning takeaway. To many Whitby is the fish and chip capital of the world.”
