A GROUP of teenagers are being offered the chance to join an innovative project which will develop their skills, encourage them to learn and improve their chances of securing a job.
PROJECT-U, based at Darlington College’s Catterick Skills Centre, is aimed at 16-18 year olds who are Neet – not in education, employment or training.
The project will combine vocational study with team building, personal development and fun activities leading to a Level one qualification.
Teenagers have a choice of options including painting and decorating, catering, creative media, uniformed services, business administration/IT, caring for children, and hair and beauty.
It is also hoped rural crafts will be made available to students in October, delivered in partnership with Askham Bryan College.
Young people can join PROJECT-U from October 5 and enrol for 10, 20 or 30 weeks. The day will start with a breakfast at 9am and studies from 9.30 am to 3.30pm, up to four days per week.
Programmes can be tailored to suit individuals, but will all include development of personal and social skills, visits, projects, speakers and sports and activities.
D arlington College principal Tim Grant said: “This is a tremendously exciting project offering young people opportunities they may never have been exposed to before.
“It has the potential to be life-changing, because it shows young people that education and training can be fun, stimulating and rewarding, encouraging them to adapt, open their minds to all possibilities and realise their true potential.
“We have excellent facilities and staff and the courses will be delivered in a warm, welcoming and supportive fashion by a college that takes a genuine interest in students’ development, success and futures.”
