A GROUP has been formed with the aim of boosting businesses in the remote Upper Dales.

The Swaledale and Arkengarthdale Business Forum was established in response to a group of local business owners, who wanted to provide the mechanism to improve visitors’ experiences, highlight the availability of attractions and improve information on services to the local community. Following a period of inactivity from the former local business association and in a climate of public spending cuts, the business community was galvanised into taking over the reins and creating a new forum to help ensure the continued long-term prosperity of the two dales.

A steering committee has explored the ways of achieving the goals and ambitions of the new group.

These include a revamped website, a new visitor guide and a co-ordinated marketing that will embrace social media.

Chairman David Doorbar said: "We live and work in a special part of the Dales which can be overlooked by potential visitors.

"There are some fantastic places to see, a wide variety of things to do and places to stay but we need to tell everybody about them.

"It is important for all the businesses to unite and help each other promote this special place.

"From farming to plumbing, to pubs and restaurants, we are all dependent on visitors and tourism to help guarantee future jobs for our families and the quality of life that everyone hopes to enjoy.

"I sincerely hope that all my fellow business owners come on board to help make this initiative a success."
