ORGANISERS of the region’s biggest agricultural shows are hopeful for record-breaking crowds for the event on Sunday.

Some of the team behind the North Yorkshire County Show, to be held at South Otterington, near Northallerton, yesterday took a break from final preparations to hand over a £500 donation to a good cause chosen by landowner Andy Preston.

He opted for the recently-established Middlesbrough and Teesside Philanthropic Foundation as recipient of the show’s largesse.

The charity, of which Mr Preston is chairman, seeks to raise and allocate funds to community groups in the area.

The cheque was received by foundation patron Ian Tracey, from Tees Valley accountancy and business advice firm Davies Tracey.

Show chairman Colin Johnson, handing over the donation, said: "We are very grateful for the Prestons’ ongoing support to the show. It’s a lovely site and a great place to have the county show – everything fits in nicely.

Music at Sunday’s show will be provided by the Northallerton Area Schools’ Concert Band.

Other local young people will be involved in helping the event run smoothly: local scouts raising funds for a trip to Australia will assist in the car park and hand out show catalogues.

Show secretary Alan Andrew said all trade stands and space in the food and craft marquees was sold out, while entries in some sections were exceeding last year’s numbers.

Last year, some 12,000 people came through the gates in glorious sunshine.

This year, the show’s 33rd, will see a diverse range of attractions, including show jumping, light and heavy horses, traction engines, classic cars and motorcycles.

The show runs from 8am to 5.30pm. Admission costs £8 for adults (concessions £5), under fives go free. Dogs are welcome, provided they are kept on leads at all times.
