THE organisers of a floral competition have invited young people to take part by writing a poem about the wildlife in their gardens.
Helmsley in Bloom volunteers are working to get the town looking its best in time for the Yorkshire in Bloom judges to arrive on July 12.
The poetry competition has three categories: under sevens, eight to 11-year-olds and 12 to 16-year-olds.
Entrants must compose a short poem, no longer than six lines long, which must be submitted by July 8.
Jean Marsden, Helmsley in Bloom committee member, said: "Helmsley has a small group of volunteers who work hard to keep the town looking at its best throughout the year both for its residents and the many visitors.
We would like to encourage all youngsters to take an interest in gardening and help to make their town shine. Not only is gardening a rewarding outdoor activity, this competition will give them the opportunity to let their creative juices flow."
Entries can be sent to jean.helmsleytownhall@hotmail.co.uk or posted to Wildlife in the Garden competition, The Jays, Ashdale Road, Helmsley, York, YO62 5DD.
