CIVIC TALK: The next lecture for the Richmond and District Civic Society will be led by William Feaver about The Pitman Painters.

Mr Feaver is a former art critic and now an artist in his own right but is best known for his book, the Pitman Painters: The Ashington Painters 1934-1984, which has been turned into a successful play.

The lecture will be held on June 9 at the Zetland Centre, in Richmond, at 7.30pm.

Admission for guests is £4. This lecture has been rearranged from last month.

FOLK NIGHT: Folk group Fourum will play at the Richmond Swaledale Folk Club, in New Road, Richmond, as they prepare for the release of their new album.

The gig, on Saturday at 8pm, will feature support act Nick Brooker.

Entry is by ticket only, priced £7, from Paul on 01748-824150.

HAIRY EVENT: A Lashes and Moustaches Summer Ball will be held on June 18 to raise funds for Yorkshire Cancer Research, at Stilton House Farm, near Helmsley.

Men are encouraged to grow, draw or stick on a moustache for the evening, while for the ladies, the bigger the fake eyelashes the better.

The evening will include a three course meal provided by the Helmsley committee, a champagne reception and live entertainment from Beatles tribute act, Beatles For Sale.

Tickets for the ball, which starts at 7.30pm and finishes at 1am, cost £45 per person. Call Helen on 01439-770243 to reserve places.

VOTES NEEDED: Bosses at Yorebridge House, in the village of Bainbridge in Wensleydale, are asking guests to vote for the hotel to put it on the shortlist of the Observer Food Monthly Awards.

The owners of the five-star hotel are hoping to compete in the Best Restaurant category.

Anyone casting their vote at www.easyanswer.net/observer/ will be entered into a prize draw to win a wine lover’s trip to Bordeaux, gourmet picnic hampers, dinner cooked by Heston Blumenthal or a year’s supply of organic vegetables.
