AMATEUR gardeners can get some hands on advice at an opening day to celebrate the best in community gardening.

The Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens is running a series of events aimed at giving people the opportunity to get their hands dirty with some fun and practical environmental activities.

A free open day will be held at the Reeth Community Orchard, on Tuesday, June 14, to give people the chance to find out about the green organisations they can involved with.

Four one-hour workshops will be held at the event, including bee-keeping, medicinal plants, elderflower cordial making and knowing your soil.

David Furness, from Reeth Community Orchard, said: "On the day visitors will be able to have a look around to see what we do, share tips and ideas, learn new skills and find out some low-cost ways to make their life that bit more eco-friendly.

"It’s all about getting stuck in and enjoying yourself, so visitors will definitely need boots and gardening gear."

Places at the event are available on a first come, first served basis.
