A TURF-growing company’s management restructuring has sown the seeds of success.
Tyas Turf, based at Murkey Hill, Middleton Tyas, near Richmond, is reaping the benefits of a reorganisation which sees new manager James Metcalfe at the controls.
He and his staff are now delivering hundreds of square metres of Yorkshire turf a day across the country.
James grew up on a local farm and after leaving Barnard Castle School worked in software sales, invaluable experience he is now putting to good use as he helps develop Tyas Turf's website and on-line sales and marketing.
"We want to expand and certainly have the potential to do so," he said.
"Our turf matches anything in the industry and more people are beginning to recognise its quality and value for money. There is great potential for an excellent business here.”
Tyas Turf currently grows 80 acres, which is a special blend of fescue and rye grasses which are hard wearing and remain green all year round.
Customers range from developers and landscapers in London to farm shops at Mainsgill and Thorpe Farm just a few miles away along the A66.
North-East councils have also placed orders for schools, playgrounds, verges and roundabouts, as have national parks, caravan parks and a host of domestic customers. They have even provided new turf for the goal mouths at Darlington Football arena.
"My team and I have put a lot of hard work into nurturing the business which is really paying off," said James.
