STAFF and volunteers from two Thirsk organisations are joining forces to celebrate National Volunteers Week on June 1 to 7.

Members of The World of James Herriot and Thirsk Volunteer Centre are hosting a historical walk around the market town followed by a tour of the Herriot museum on June 5.

More than 30 people are expected on the outing which will be led by local historian Jennifer Ellison.

The walk sets off from the museum at 1.30pm, finishing with refreshments in its garden served by the Vale of Mowbray Guides, and where more volunteers are expected to join the celebrations.

"Volunteering is crucial to the local community - The World of James Herriot has a loyal team that help to show visitors around," said Sal Billany, Co-ordinator of the Thirsk Volunteer Centre.

"This event gives us a chance to thank all volunteers. They make such a difference to so many people in a huge number of ways – whether it’s befriending an elderly person, helping out in a charity shop or working in the environment."
