HEAVY traffic is to be permanently barred from the historic swing bridge that links the two halves of Whitby.

A 7.5 tonne weight limit was temporarily imposed after the bridge failed in the open position last year, effectively cutting the town in two for several days.

Now it is to be made permanent in an effort to preserve the century-old structure for future generations.

Following a full structural assessment engineers from North Yorkshire County Council have concluded the limit is essential.

Before the restriction was I place the bridge had a 17-tonne weight limit which allowed buses and coaches and many heavy goods vehicles to cross. The new limit will however only allow access for cars and lighter goods vehicles and the operators of many buses and coaches, including the Whitby Tour Bus, have had to make alternative route arrangements.

County Councillor Joe Plant said: "I am confident that the new lowered weight limit will protect this historic structure and help prolong its life for many years to come.

"It is unfortunate that there has been disruption to some buses, coaches and heavy goods vehicles, however the integrity of this Whitby landmark is paramount."
