TWO teenage students have received a cross they are happy to bear - to honour their achievements and dedication.

The Cuthbert Cross is presented annually to the boy and girl at Northallerton College who “by loyal chivalrous and honourable conduct have done the most to enhance the character and reputation of the school.”

The award marks a 700-year-old association with schools in Northallerton and the Dean and Chapter of Durham Cathedral.

It was first presented in 1910 to commemorate the newly erected grammar school building in Northallerton and the winners are chosen by students and staff.

Winner Rachel Foster, 17, of Great Smeaton, said: "I was so surprised to win this. I just enjoy making a difference and helping others."

Rachel has been involved in organising the leavers' ball, and has been responsible for the year book.

Alongside her school duties she has been actively involved in charity events for Children in Need, Sport Relief and Help For Heroes, helping to raise an impressive £3,000.

Fellow winner Jacob Sankey, 18, also of Great Smeaton, said: "It's such a prestigious award and I am very proud and surprised to have won."

Jacob was commended for his charity work, involvement in fundraising days and his voluntary work in the community, including helping at Southwood's Nursing Home and the Alzheimer's Centre in Northallerton.

"Doing something good and helping people really motivates me," said Jacob.

As well as his work in the community, Jacob has contributed to school sport playing rugby on a regional basis and becoming county captain.

His talents have also been identified in music, where for the past five years he has played tuba in the school concert band.
