A SPORTS open day to encourage people with disabilities to take up new activities has been organised by a local charity.

The open day will be held at Richmond Swimming Pool, on Sunday, between 10am and 4pm, and is an opportunity for people with long-term conditions or disabilities to learn more about exercise and watch demonstrations of disability friendly activities.

The event has been organised by Yoodo Sports, an initiative run by charity Leonard Cheshire Disability and aims to get more disabled people and those with a long term health condition to take part in sport or other regular physical activity.

The open day is also looking for volunteers to become activity buddies who help support participants to play sport or get active by accompanying them on a trip to the gym, pool or local park.

Wendy McGauley, Yoodo Sports national volunteer co-ordinator, said: "Disabled people often face the serious challenge of changing people’s perceptions of who they are and what they can do. Beginning a new sport or pastime is no exception.

"This event is a great opportunity for disabled people, people with long-term health conditions and members of the public to find out more about disability exercise."

Visitors will be able to watch demonstrations of disability friendly sports boccia, new age kurling and wheelchair basketball by North Yorkshire Sport.
