A COUNTRY pub is aiming to break a world record by creating the largest ever serving of fish and chips.
Staff at the Wensleydale Heifer, in West Witton, have started preparations for the record breaking attempt by taking delivery of the enormous pan that will be used to fry the fish.
The attempt will take place during the summer when chefs will deep fry a 40lb fillet of prime halibut in four gallons of its Black Sheep beer batter, 60lbs of hand cut chips and a vat of mushy peas.
The world record is currently held by The Black Rose restaurant in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, with chips weighing almost 44lb and the fish 34lb.
A representative from Guinness World Records has been invited to witness the cooking of the dish, which will then be shared among guests.
David Moss, owner of the Wensleydale Heifer, said: "The Heifer has always been renowned for quality fish and chips, so it seemed fitting to try to bring back the world record to England and Yorkshire.
"The attempt is a chance for the Heifer to take on a real challenge and we’re optimistic about our chances for success; the fish is ready and waiting, our pan has arrived and we have all the enthusiasm we could need."
A date for the record attempt has not yet been set. All proceeds will go to charity.
