THEY look like the stuff of science fiction - but the transport of the future is about to work with the transport of the past.

The National Railway Museum in York is to give everybody the chance to take a ride on the gravity-defying scooters known as Segways.

The two-wheeled, self-balancing electric vehicles were launched in 2001 and have since caught the public’s imagination.

Computers and motors in the base of the device keep the Segway upright and users control its movement by leaning forwards, backwards, left and right.

Now the NRM is to feature them in the latest addition to its site - Exhilaration Station.

A unique custom-built outdoor track will allow visitors to whizz along inflatable railway tunnels and even through some level crossing barriers.

The ten-minute ride will cost £6 - although the museum is free to visit - and opens to visitors on October c23, in time for the half0tyerm holidays.

Marketing manager Emma Farley said: "We’re thrilled to have such an exciting new offer to add to our museum.

"The Segways will provide something completely different for our visitors to enjoy and as we’re the only location in North Yorkshire where visitors can just turn up and ride a Segway without making a group booking, we’re certain they will be really popular.
