THE QUEEN will be visiting the region later this month when she officially opens one of the biggest theatres of its kind in Europe.
Accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, she will formally open the Open Air Theatre in Scarborough on May 20 following a £3.5m refurbishment.
She will unveil a plaque at the 6,500-seat venue and will be treated to the borough's own Royal Variety Performance, Grains of Sand written by Chris Darling and performed by Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre OutReach group.
Local impresario Tony Peers will host the occasion and there will also be some performances from the stars of his Summer Show Spectacular.
Scarborough Borough Council’s chief executive, Jim Dillon, said: "It is 35 years since Her Majesty last visited Scarborough, so this will be an historic occasion for both the town and the whole borough.
"We couldn’t ask for a more special guest to open a very special theatre; the occasion is certainly one that none of us will ever forget."
