A POPULAR visitor attraction is to provide a showcase for visitors to perform their own work based on James Herriot.

Budding writers can take along their poetry, short stories or songs to the World of James Herriot, in Thirsk, to perform to a live audience.

The Hambleton District Council run centre is to open after normal closing hours to host a creative writing workshop.

The event takes place on Friday, May 14, between 5pm and 7pm with slots on stage between 5.30pm and 6.30pm.

A competition is also to be launched on the night with a closing date of June 14 for new work about James Herriot.

Elisabeth Salmen, audience development officer of the council, said: "Visitors will get the chance to see the museum in a different light.

"We hope lots of people will enter into the spirit of our competition.

"We want them to let their imaginations run wild on just what they think might go on at night in a museum like the Herriot centre."

Normal Herriot centre admission of £6 for adults, £4.70 concession, five-15-years £5.20 and under five free applies.

There is no extra charge for entering the workshop or the competition. For deatils contact the centre on 01845-524234.
