A ZERO tolerance and fines are the latest weapons set to be used in the fight against litter and dog fouling in Thirsk.
Anyone spotted dropping rubbish or not cleaning up after their pet could be issued with an on the spot fine.
The move comes as members of Hambleton District Council’s Thirsk area forum ask the authority to take strong action on the issue.
An action plan has been drawn up and the council’s streetscene team are to work with local groups on the problems in the town.
Councillor Gareth Dadd, area forum chairman, said: "Urgent action is needed to wipe out these problems and improve Thirsk.
"We want to take a zero tolerance approach to litter and dog fouling – anyone caught will and should be fined.
"We hope that by working together these problems can be wiped out quickly making Thirsk a cleaner and brighter place for visitors and residents alike."
In the last year 37 fines of £80 were issued for littering in Thirsk with the amount rising to £2,500 if a prosecution follows.
Fines for dog fouling start at £50 and rise to £1,000 if a prosecution takes place.
