TEXTILE students have been picking up tips from a top local designer as part of their studies at school.

Designers Liz Blogg and Nige Parkin, of Bedale-based business Minx, headed to Thirsk School for the event.

They passed on expert tips about the fashion industry to the next generation of designers.

Liz Blogg said: "I am keen to let the students know that the work they are doing now is an essential part of the design process.

"This has given me an opportunity to support the work of the school’s textiles teachers whilst helping the students to understand the requirements of designing for a commercial collection.

"I have shown the students many of the features that should be considered when designing dresses and also talked to them about how we go from a rough design, through sample and production to the finished article.

"We have even allowed the students a sneak preview of the 2010 collection." Sue Williamson, a textiles teacher at Thirsk, said: "This was a very informative talk and the students got a lot out of it."
