A BUSINESSMAN is to join some his sporting heroes and part in the ride of a lifetime in an effort to raise money for charity.

Richard Barker, managing director of Hill Cross Furniture, based in North Cowton, near Northallerton, is to take part in the Dallaglio Cycle Slam next month.

The challenge is the brainchild of former England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio, who hopes to raise more than £1m for Sport Relief.

The Cycle Slam is based on the Six Nations Rugby Championship and kicks off in Rome, before travelling to Paris, London, Cardiff, Dublin and Edinburgh over 28 days.

Mr Barker, also known as Ronnie, 39, will ride in stage three of the challenge, between Paris and London, and hopes to raise £4,000 personally, which will be split between Sport Relief and Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Along with 64 other riders Mr Barker has four days to complete the stage.

For some of the stages sports stars such as Ian Botham, Les Ferdinand, James Cracknell and Michael Vaughan will join the ride, as well as rugby players from each of the countries.

Mr Barker said: "I’ve been cycling to work for two years, which is two miles, but now I’m trying to do at least 35 miles three or four times a week after work.

"I will be cycling alongside some of the best sportsmen in the world which is just mind blowing for me, all the while raising money for charities which are all close to our hearts. It’s simply one of the most rewarding things I have ever taken part in."
