POLICE have confirmed that an investigation is underway after a body was found in the River Ouse.

The unidentified body of a man was spotted face down and caught up in fencing under the toll bridge in Selby by passers-by yesterday afternoon.

Jeff Rodgers, who works on the toll bridge, said the man looked as though he was only wearing underwear and that his legs may have been bound.

This has not been confirmed by North Yorkshire Police.

Part of the A19 was closed for more than two hours while police recovered the body with the help of the fire service.

The site where the man was discovered has been cordoned off while enquiries continue, although police have said it is too early to say whether the death is suspicious.

Police have been searching the River Ouse for the past month for missing University of York student Pierre Le Moignan who has not been seen since November 21.
