THE creation of a contemporary building within a 13-th century ruin has won a major award from the Royal Institute of British Architects.
The National Trust won the White Rose award for the painstaking development of the Porter’s Lodge interpretation centre at Fountains Abbey, near Ripon.
The centre, which was completed in 2008, was constructed within the ruins of the medieval gatehouse at Fountains Abbey.
Located on the edge of the West Green overlooking the abbey, it is a simple, modern construction within the walls of - and therefore screened by - the historic structure.
Estate general manager Chris Fowler said: "This is great news for all involved in the Porters Lodge project here at Fountains.
"The funding came from the European Converting Sacred Spaces programme and we’re delighted that all the hard work it took to achieve this outstanding contemporary structure within this treasured World Heritage Site has been recognised."
The RIBA White Rose Awards celebrate design excellence in architecture and the built environment in the Yorkshire region.
And Porters Lodge architect Susan Amaku, from Woodhall Planning and Conservation, attended a ceremony in Leeds to collect the honour.
