THE first batches of the new swine flu vaccine are set to be delivered to all GPs surgeries in North Yorkshire in the coming days.
Some surgeries have already taken delivery of the first stocks and others will receive their supplies by early next week.
Several patient groups have been identified as priority for vaccination, including pregnant women, anyone aged between six months and 65 in a clinical at-risk group, household contacts of people with compromised immune systems and people aged 65 and over in the current seasonal flu vaccine clinical at-risk groups.
Over 65s who are otherwise healthy will not be vaccinated as they appear to have some natural immunity to the virus.
Dr Phil Kirby, associate director of public health at NHS North Yorkshire and York, said: "Over the next few weeks, people in the priority groups will come in for their swine flu jab. Some people will need to receive two doses of the vaccine and will therefore need to come in twice.
"Although the swine flu virus has so far proven to be mild in most people, for others it has been more serious. The vaccine programme will help protect those who are most vulnerable to infection."
