POLICE are appealing for help after vandals scratched cars parked outside homes in a quiet market town.

Two cars were scratched with a sharp implement in Sowerby, next to Thirsk, between October 22 and 24 on Topcliffe Road.

There is evidence to suggest a gang of youths was seen near to the damaged cars around 11pm on October 22.

While residents say it is not the first time that this kind of damage has taken place.

Inspector Tim Osborne, of Thirsk Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "It is unacceptable that residents cannot leave their cars outside their homes without them being damaged.

"We will be increasing high visibility patrols in the area to deter future offences and remind public and offenders we take this kind of reckless crime very seriously and we will bring those responsible to justice."

Anyone who can help should call the police on 0845-6060-247 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
