A MAJOR resurfacing scheme is due to start on a section of the A684 in a Wensleydale village following requests from the public.

The week-long project will begin on Main Street in West Witton, near Leyburn, from Monday, March 16.

The section of the A684 will be closed between 9am and 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, and drivers are asked to move their vehicles before 8am.

Drivers are also being asked to familiarise themselves with the extensive diversion route and to plan extra time for their journeys.

During the works, vehicle access to properties will be restricted and parking will not be permitted but on-site contractors will assist wherever possible.

North Yorkshire County Councillor Karin Sedgwick, member for Middle Dales, said: “There have been requests from the public for resurfacing work to be carried out in West Witton so we are pleased to be able to deliver.

“We have been carrying out similar projects in Richmondshire to ensure the roads are the best they can be for drivers.”

Cllr Don Mackenzie, executive member for highways, added: “Although the work will inevitably cause some disruption we are sure the travelling public will appreciate the long-term benefits.

“I would like to remind drivers to follow the diversions in place and make arrangements to leave their vehicles in alternative locations.”
