A DISTRICT council is 'vehemently opposing' North Yorkshire County Council's plans for a new one way system.
NYCC wants to put in place a new one-way system at St Nicholas Street in Norton, near Malton, but Ryedale council is against the plans.
Councillors have expressed 'significant concerns' about the impact on people living in the area, as well as on local businesses.
The issue was discussed at the Ryedale District Council Policy and Resources Committee on Thursday evening.
A letter to the highways team at the County Council was tabled, which sets out a range of concerns about the proposals.
Primarily these centre on the need for more comprehensive work to understand what actions can be taken across the area to reduce traffic congestion, rather than implemented this system in isolation.
Chair of Policy and Resources, Cllr Luke Ives, said: “There’s an unprecedented strength of feeling on this from people living and working in the area. And we agreed. This isn’t the right long-term solution for the area.
“We don’t think local people have been properly listened to in the decision to put forward this proposal.
“We know traffic congestion causes significant issues, but we need to look at the bigger picture across the whole area, rather than put in place individual solutions. Making changes at St Nicholas Street has the potential to cause big problems elsewhere.”
Ryedale District Council will now make formal representation to North Yorkshire County Council setting out their position as part of the consultation.
