THE former home of one of York’s famous chocolate-making families is to be reopened next month, with a brand new display.
Goddards in York, the former family home of the Terry family, reopens on March 1 with a brand new display entitled Terry’s and War.
It will tell the story of how the Terry family and life at their chocolate factory were affected by war.
Goddards is an Arts and Crafts house and garden on the edge of York racecourse, on Tadcaster Road, and was opened to visitors by the National Trust in July 2012.
The story opens in Noel Terry’s former library and takes extracts from letters which went back and forth between the factory owner and his wife Kathleen during the war.
He served in the West Yorkshire Regiment and took part in the Battle of the Somme. During the interwar period, business was booming and Noel Terry made managing director. During the Second World War, the factory changed its production from chocolate to propeller blades.
Goddards is open from Wednesdays to Sundays, from March 1. For more information, telephone; 01904-771930 or visit; www.nationaltrust.org.uk/goddards
