THE completion of a project to create a new river crossing, which was backed by residents and community groups, will be celebrated on Saturday (June 1).
The instalment of the Jubilee Bridge across the River Leven in Stokesley is the result of several years’ work by volunteers.
The bridge has been in place several weeks, but this weekend there will be a celebration to mark the achievement.
The project required the co-operation of The River Leven Group, Stokesley’s Manorial Lands Trust and town and district councils.
The previous iron footbridge, built in 1900, was closed a couple of years ago after it was deemed unsafe. The new bridge is wheelchair and pushchair friendly and provides a safe crossing for pedestrians.
It will be officially opened by Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Lord Crathorne in a celebration due to take place between 3.30pm and 5pm. There will also be refreshments and silver band music.
Volunteers are being brought together in the town to help clear up the riverside in Stokesley ahead of the ceremony and pull rubbish out of the water.
