A WELL-known community stalwart in Thirsk , who was klast year awarded an MBE, has now been honoured for his 60 years dedication to Rotary International for England and Ireland.
Harry Woodhead, who turns 95 next month, said the last 60 years had "crept up" on him.
A presentation evening was recently held when he was presented with a a 60 year membership award and a letter of thanks from the world Rotary president.
Mr Woodhead, who served as a captain in Burma in the Second World War, has given a lifetime of service to Thirsk.
After the war he ran a chemists, with four full-qualified chemists including himself, specialising in agricultural and veterinary chemistry.
he also took a keen interest in the local auction mart, of which he has been chairman for many years.
He said: “I became involved in Thirsk Rotary after the war and over the years we did a lot for the town – including building two Abbeyfield homes.”
He played a key role in the development of the care homes and Thirsk Auction Mart.
Mr Woodhead still attends some Rotary meetings and has honorary membership.
He said: “I still go along to meetings when it is a special occasion but I don’t like to drive at night anymore after I was poorly last autumn.
“So many people did a lot of good with Rotary and I’m pleased to be part of it – it was wonderful when they had the special meeting for me, and they said they did not know of anyone else who had served for so long.”
The widower has two children, Janet and Ian, two grandchildren and a great-grandson.
