A DOZEN teenage dancers are celebrating after being selected to represent Yorkshire at a national competition.

North Yorkshire Dance, which has members aged 13 to 17 from across the county, won praise from a panel of judges after performing an original routine to an audience of 650 people at West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds.

The group, which included Hannah Smith, 16, from Reeth, near Richmond, and Beth Hodgson, 16, from Aldborough St John, near Darlington, staged a jazz and contemporary routine titled DNA, choreographed by Julius Ebreo, at the Fresh 2013 festival.

Gail Ferrin, of North Yorkshire Dance, said the routine was set to drumming and focused on how rhythm permeates dance styles, with the performers becoming the beat.

She said the group’s attention to technique and theatre performance saw it overcome competition from 32 other companies to be selected as one of three to represent Yorkshire at the national U.Dance 2013 youth dance festival in July.

She said: “They did work very hard on the day and managed to make an impression and pull it off beautifully.”
