YOUNGSTERS at a primary school were given the chance to be streetwise and name new roads in a housing development.

Pupils at Colburn Community Primary School entered a competition to name six new streets in the new Woodside Chase development in Colburn.

Taylor Wimpey, which ran the competition in partnership with Broadacres Housing Association, received more than 70 entries in the contest.

The names chosen were; Maple Avenue, Rosebud Way, Tulip Avenue, Beechwood Grove, Bluebell Walk and Woodland Avenue. The street names have all now been formally approved by Richmondshire District Council and the children whose suggestions were used each received £20.

Fiona Coleman, Development Manager at Broadacres Housing Association, said: “The children have done a fantastic job and we are looking forward to inviting them to the development once the homes are built and the street names are in place.”

Deputy headteacher Debbie Nicholas said: “The children have really embraced this project and it will be nice for the winners, and the school in general, when we see the street names permanently in place.”

A total of 272 homes are being built over the next five years on the site just off Catterick Road in Colburn. They will be a mix of two, three and four-bedroom properties.
