BUSINESSES on an industrial estate where more than 950 people are employed have appealed for help to build an emergency flood relief road after being repeatedly cut off during bad weather..
Dalton Airfield industrial estate , near Thirsk, is home to several major companies including Severfield Rowen, one of the leading steel fabricators in the country who have supplied steel for Wembley and The Shard, the tallest building in Britain.
Businesses have asked Hambleton District Council and North Yorkshire County Council to help pay for a £220,000 relief road which would ensure access to and from the industrial estate, even in bad weather.
Hambleton District Council agreed to give £25,000 towards the cost yesterday.
Coun Neville Huxtable said:”Dalton can be virtually cut off and when that happens it causes all manner of problems.
"Companies such as Severfield work round the clock seven days a week, they need access, there are huge economic reasons why this should be supported."
Coun Tim Swales added: "There are 950 workers on this air field and there is still room for expansion, it is a big part of our district employment and something we should support.”
