POLICE are warning residents to be on their guard following a sneak-in burglary in the Yorkshire Dales.
The incident in Gunnerside, near Reeth, happened a week ago but details have only just been released.
At around 5.30pm on December 4, the victim, a man in late 60s, was in the kitchen of his house when he disturbed a male in the downstairs lobby area having heard a door open.
The man made an excuse then left the property, running down the street in the direction of Reeth.
He was in his 50s, with very short hair, and wore a beige-coloured waist length coat and dark trousers. A vehicle was seen in the area at the time, described as a dark coloured estate.
It is believed that up to three men were involved and it is possible they were checking out other properties in the area.
Although nothing was taken police are appealing for information and have reiterated their advice to residents to lock their doors, even while they are at home.
Detective Constable Scott Nugent said: “I am appealing for anyone who saw any suspicious people or vehicles or anyone who looked out of place in Gunnerside or the surrounding villages.
“I’m also urging residents to make sure they take the most basic security measures by locking their doors and hiding tempting valuables out of sight – especially at this time of year when thieves are on the lookout for expensive Christmas gifts.”
