SPEED CAMERAS: Temporary speed cameras have been put in place on the A64 ahead of major road works on Bishopthorpe Bridge, near York. The work, between Fulford and Askham Bar interchanges, will see 30mph speed restrictions during the day and westbound carriageway closures at night while joint replacement work is carried out. The scheme is due to be finished by December 7, subject to weather conditions.

AFGHAN BOUND: 100 soldiers from 2 Signal regiment at Imphal Barracks, York, have set out for a six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan. They will be providing secure communications, computers, video-conferencing and telephones for units in Helmand Province and Kabul.

STEPPING DOWN: The chief executive of York Archaeological Trust , Professor John Walker, is to retire at the end of March next year. Prof Walker has been at the helm of the organisation, which has an annual turnover of £6m and employs more than 200 staff plus volunteers, for ten years.
