COLLECTIONS of garden waste will be suspended across Richmondshire over the quieter winter months.

Next month will see the last pick up of the green wheelie bins – which take garden materials – for 10 weeks.

Householders will still get their grey household waste bin emptied – as well as collections of recycling in their boxes and blue bags.

The changes are being brought about as a result of the reduction in garden waste collected over the winter months – and as part of a cost cutting exercise. It will save the authority around £12,000.

“Last year we collected 4,045 tonnes of garden waste – but only 300 tonnes of that was picked up over the winter months,” said Councillor Tony Duff.

The changes come into place in November with the last collections on either week commencing November 19 or 26, depending on your collection week. They restart on weeks commencing February 25 or March 4.

There will however be one collection to take Christmas Trees on weeks commencing January 7 or 14.

Full details of the changes will be delivered to all residents over the coming month – new bin tags will be attached to every bin detailing how it affects each household.
