POLICE are appealing for help after a “despicable” distraction burglary in Northallerton.

The thief entered the elderly victim’s home in Priory Close at about 11.30am on Saturday and introduced himself as “Mary’s cousin.”

He asked to use the toilet and for a cup of coffee and when the homeowner returned from the kitchen the man had left.

But a short time later the victim realised a wallet and purse containing around £120 were missing.

The suspect is described as in his twenties and around 6ft tall with a medium build. At the time he was wearing a light blue anorak, tracksuit bottoms and gloves.

PC Quita Passmore, said: “This is a truly despicable crime. Targeting an elderly and vulnerable victim is a callous act. “If you can help to identify the thief you must contact the police or Crimestoppers immediately.”
