TOWN ROOTS: Local historian David Heron leads a guided walk tracing the ancient roots of Chester-le-Street, tomorrow (October 20). The three-mile ramble, titled: The Fort on the Road – Retracing the Ancient Roots of a Modern Town, starts outside St Mary and St Cuthbert’s Church, in Church Chare, at 10am.

WARD SURGERY: Members of Durham County Council for the Durham South ward, councillors Jan Blakey and Mac Williams, will hold a joint ward surgery at the community centre, at the rear of Rogerson Terrace, Croxdale, near Durham, tomorrow (October 20), from 10am to 11am.

BREW BENEFITS: A coffee morning staged at Boulmer Court, a sheltered housing complex near Bullion Hall, Chester-le-Street, on September 28, raised a total of £306.20 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Scheme manager Lynn Smart thanked all those who helped run the event, and everyone who attended and made donations.

FORCES HELP: A coffee morning will be held at Carrville Methodist Church, in the High Street, Carrville, on the outskirts of Durham, on Saturday, November 3, from 10am to 11.30am. It will feature cake stalls, a raffle, children’s toys, books and home accessories. Proceeds will be donated to the SSAFA Forces’ Help charity.
